Class Summary
WEEK 7
Dr Yip briefed us on the new assignment - Project 2: Sense of Place. We
have to watch pre-recorded lecture videos before starting this project. A
timeline for this project is given:
W07 Project 2 briefing
W08 Independent learning week
- Conduct some brainstorming to ascertain the content (determine a
"Place")
- Do visual research and produce 2-3 sketches
W09 Discussion about the "Place" and the "Sense" we
selected and our ideas for the sketches
W10 Discussion to finalise our idea with a complete
design
WEEK 8
During the independent learning week, I watched the pre-recorded video and
the extra videos suggested by Dr Yip.
WEEK 9
Dr Yip reviewed our progress work and sketches. Dr Yip mentioned not just sketching out the place we chose, but applying
our sense to the place in our idea sketch. The main objective of this
project is to express how we feel about the place we decided to We could
have several perspectives of the view of the place as references to
explore the sense of place. We should also notice the arrangement of the
blog which we have to mention the place we chose first, then followed by
the other visual references in the section of Visual References, while our
sketches should be in the section of Idea Exploration.
WEEK 10
Dr Yip reminded us to be aware of the deadline for this project. The
feedback session was conducted by Dr Yip as usual.
INSTRUCTIONS
Project 2: Sense of Place
RECAP OF PROJECT 1 BRIEF
This project is about our interpretation of a place. We must select a "Place" to express it based on our "Sense". There
are three choices of "Place" that we could choose to express:
- a place you wish to go / a place you have never been before (it could be an actual / an unrealistic place)
- a real place you
have been before with good or bad experiences
- a current place you are at
For this project, a lot of visual research is needed. We should be observant of our surroundings (people, buildings,
signage, nature, activities, etc) and record the moments as visuals
for this project in photographs, videos and/or sketches.
We should study the visuals collected and select the relevant and
interesting ones that can translate into a design work that reflects
our interpretation of a place. Present our ideas in 2-3
sketches using the visuals chosen as references. Design principles are
required to apply in our design work. Any materials are allowed for
our design work. The visuals collected, sketches and progress work
should record as parts of the design process.
DESIGN PROCESS
1. Visual references
Before starting with visual research, I begin with understanding the meaning
of "Sense of Place". I have read an
article
about the relationship between the sense of place and the urban environment. I
could comprehend the meaning of the Sense of Place defined in the article:
“What kind of place is this? What does this place mean to you? What does this place enable you to do?”
Sense of place describes our relationship with places, expressed in different dimensions of human life: emotions, biographies, imagination, stories, and personal experiences (Basso, 1996).
In environmental psychology, sense of place—how we perceive a place— includes place attachment and place meaning (Kudryavtsev, Stedman and Krasny, 2012).Place attachment reflects a bond between people and placesPlace meaning reflects symbolic meanings people ascribe to places.
In short, "sense of place is the lens through which people experience and make meaning of their experiences in and with place" (Adams, 2013)
The "Place" and the "Sense"
The place I have chosen is Teluk Cempedak, a beach in Kuantan. I went
there when I had a short trip to Kuantan. I like the chill vibes and feel
relaxed listening to the songs and the sound of waves. The moments at
Teluk Cempedak were precious and unforgettable to me.

For visual research, the four aspects I considered in this project are the key elements, perspective, sense of space, and art style.
KEY ELEMENTS
Below are the elements I would like to feature:
- from Fig. 1.1: singer, cyclists, bikes, coffee shop
- from Fig. 1.4: beach, waves
- from Fig. 1.5: coconut tree, my
slippers
- other: drift bottle
PERSPECTIVE
As long as we are to create a design for a place, I kept thinking about
the perspective I would like to apply. I got the idea of this
first-person perspective from the illustration below (Fig. 1.7) and
apply in my design.

SENSE OF SPACE
I intend to explore the visual references of mini-worlds that indicate
the sense of space I want to apply in my idea sketch.

in a paper coffee cup.

The flow in this illustration (Fig. 1.10) is interesting and amazingly
creates a sense of space. I also like the colours used in the artwork.

ART STYLE
Both illustrations below are flat designs, but the artists apply simple light
and shadow to avoid the illustration to be too monotonous. I would also like
to apply light and shadow in my artwork.

2. Idea exploration and description
WEEK 8 / sketches
[ Place: Teluk Cempedak, Kuantan | Sense: calmness, relaxation,
enjoyment ]
I would like to archive the precious and memorable moments at Teluk Cempedak,
in which I was sitting there, feeling the sea breeze, listening to the songs
and sound of waves. I like the chill vibes there and I feel very calm and
relaxed. I use the concept of a drift bottle archiving something inside and
the idea of miniature artwork.
Hence, I conducted this sketch with the elements of the singer, some cyclists
having coffee at the cafe and listening to the songs after a ride, a coconut tree and the
beach in a drift bottle. This idea was inspired from the miniature of the coffee shop (Fig. 1.7). The hand and the leg from the corner imply a person
is bending down to pick up the drift bottle. It is a first-person perspective which I referred from the illustration (Fig. 1.6) in part of visual references.
WEEK 9 / progress work
I digitised my sketch using Adobe Illustrator in the style of vector
art which I referred to the visual references of art style (Fig. 1.11 and 1.12).

WEEK 10 / finalised design
Textures of sand and ocean
I searched the textures of sand and ocean on Google and apply them in my
artwork by applying the blending modes and adjusting their opacities.

I go with Dr Yip's suggestion to add a sun in the sky. I also added some
sunlight reflection on the ocean surface.

I added shadows and highlights to the elements to present the scene at that
time and my sense of the place (comfortable, relaxed).

Glass effects on the drift bottle and the windows of the cafe
I created the glass effects for the drift bottle and the windows of the cafe so they do not look too monotonous.

Colour attempts at the singer
I changed the singer's skin colour to brown because he is Malay.
I intended to use mainly warm colours in making colour attempts at his
clothes. I struggled with the colours so much and finally, I decided to use
the initial colour group with minor changes.

Place: Teluk Cempedak, Kuantan
Sense: calmness, relaxation, enjoyment
Software: Adobe Illustrator
Thus, I would like to archive the peaceful moments at Teluk Cempedak
in a drift bottle. I include the elements of the beach view, singer,
cyclists, bike, and coffee shop in the drift bottle and feature myself trying to pick up this
drift bottle. I created the drift bottle in such a weird shape, with an
opened, extended flow shape because there are too many beautiful moments and
people I want to archive. I also add a little detail to the drift bottle
which is a tag writing the words 'Teluk Cempedak' with a little coconut
tree, indicating the place that is memorable.
Design Principles applied
Emphasis - the singer is emphasised with high saturation and high-value red colours
Harmony and Unity - colours are well matched in the whole artwork
Movement - the musical notes, the flow of the extended drift bottle
Balance - the elements are well distributed

FEEDBACK
WEEK 8
*Independent Learning Week
WEEK 9
Dr Yip commented on my sketch (Fig. 2.2) that the drift bottle has a weird shape.
I may have to draw a closed drift bottle or change the flowing
direction of the opened drift bottle. I may also feature a right foot
a little to express well that there is a person trying to pick up the
drift bottle.
WEEK 10
The elements in my digitised sketch (Fig. 2.5 Attempt #1) are well distributed. I may proceed
with my work further with some adjustments and addition. Dr Yip
suggested emphasising the texture of the sand to be more apparent. I
should also tone down the colour of my slipper to let the main element
(the singer) stand out. I may extend the musical notes to follow the
flow and add the sun in the sky to express a sense of relaxation and
enjoyment.
REFLECTION
At first, I was a bit confused about what to do in this project and I could
not decide on a place to express the sense. Hence, I did some research
online about the Sense of Place and I have a better understanding of the
main idea of this project. I realised that doing research is a must before
starting a project. I have a clearer idea of what to do in this project and
decided on the place to express very soon.
WEEK 9
I intend to add light and shadow to my artwork but due to insufficient
knowledge of it, I could not make it. I should study further the theories
of light and shadow so I could play well and apply them to my
artwork.
WEEK 10
Every assignment is not just a task but also an exercise to build our
foundation. Lecturers are guides to us but we should not forget the
purpose of creating a design or expressing an idea and the satisfaction we
get throughout the design process and the outcome. I realised that when Dr
Yip asked me about my satisfaction with this artwork.
Final Reflection
I am quite satisfied with my final Sense of Place. I think I expressed
the sense well in my artwork. This project let me recall the moments at
Teluk Cempedak - my surroundings, my thoughts and my feelings. It is an
interesting project to discover what is the place we chose means to
us.
