INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1: Proposal

We are to study a cultural phenomenon or a particular subculture and study within a chosen theme to convey our own interpretation of the particular culture without altering the actual facts of the culture. The general theme given is "Visualism - Visual Culture".

We should produce a minimum of three preliminary ideas to visually express our interpretation of the culture we studied using design language. We are suggested to conduct the design in any digital form creatively. Each idea is to be supported by 200 words of rationale.

WEEK 1 | Ideas Proposed & Preliminary Research

Ideas Proposed

Fig. 1.1 Ideas proposed - DOCS, Week 1 (10/1/2023)

We proposed several cultures to head in and got some feedback from Ms Anis. The cultures we proposed are polka dots, tea culture, Japanese charms, Nyonya culture, wine culture and graffiti vs street art.

Preliminary Research
We work in pairs to do more research and further explore the chosen cultures below:
1. Tea Culture - Wai Kei & Jia Xi
2. Japanese Charm - Vincent & Chris
3. Graffiti vs Street Art - Xinyi & I (Rui Ying)

We do preliminary research on graffiti and street art. However, the information we found was insufficient and not comprehensive.

WEEK 2-3 | Topic Selection & Further Research

We decided to introduce "Graffiti Culture" in our proposal. The subtopics we would like to explore further are included in our proposal:
1. Introduction and History - Wai Kei
2. Graffiti Art vs. Street Art - Vincent
3. Influences of Graffiti Art on Society - Xinyi
4. Values of Graffiti Art - Vincent
5. Types of Graffiti Art - Rui Ying
6. The Uniqueness of Graffiti Art - Chris

Project 2: Data Collection

WEEK 5 | Data Collection

In the Data Collection part, we are to collect artefacts of the visual culture we are
studying. Suggested data collection methods:
• Observation study
• Interview relevant stakeholders
• Online and/or actual physical material *visual research of the selected culture (the people/arts/symbols/architecture/text/calligraphy etc)
Artefacts can be in any form: photos, videos, observation write-ups, physical artefacts like packaging, books, brochures etc and any related forms. Artefacts collected should have explanations or rationales to bridge the information between your proposal and your proposed final output.

Data Collection Methods:
1. Online research
My group member (Vincent) conducted further research on Unwritten Rules of Graffiti Culture and Graffiti Terms.

2. Google Form survey
We conducted a survey on graffiti art to raise awareness of graffiti culture and look into the perception of Malaysian towards graffiti art and culture. There are 10 questions in the survey and we promoted the survey on our social media. We got the targeted number of 60 responses.

We analysed the responses from the survey and my group member (Wai Kei) summarised them with explanations and rationales for each question.

3. Field Study
We try to discover the types of graffiti and graffiti letter styles by finding them and taking photos in our neighbourhood and at popular spots. We conducted this field study to discover graffiti in Malaysia and observe the graffiti designs in detail. By close observation of the graffiti, we were able to determine its structure and elements.

I was responsible for the site visit. I have discovered graffiti in my neighbourhood around Ara Damansara, Taman Mayang and Subang Jaya. I catogorised them according to the types, artists' names and the same series of pieces.

WEEK 6 | Artefacts Analysis & Finalised Idea

Artefacts Analysis
Our artefacts have no big issues, we just have to bridge the collected artefacts to the final visual design. Based on the result of the Google Form survey, most of our respondents think that merchandise is the best way to promote graffiti culture. After consulting with our lecturers, the visual design we decided to create is graffiti on merchandise

Mr Asrizal lead us in the direction of creating a visual design that promotes the types of graffiti and graffiti letter styles to the public through merchandise. While Ms Anis stated the importance of rationalising our visual design. The main idea of the rationale should be pointing out the purpose of the visual design we have created.

Finalised Idea

We decided to design graffiti merchandise products, including t-shirts, tote bags and phone cases as our visual design. We will be creating 4 graffiti letter styles including bubble, blockbuster, sharp and wild style to promote them to the public.

WEEK 7 | Visual Design & Poster Design

Visual Design
Our group members (Xinyi & Chris) had designed four graffiti letter styles using the letter styles names: Bubble, Blockbuster, Sharp and Wild Style. We featured these graffiti letter styles on merchandise products including t-shirts, tote bags and phone cases.

Poster Design
While other group members (Vincent & Waikei) and I were in charge of the poster design for the final presentation. We have created several poster layouts:

FEEDBACK

WEEK 1
Ms Anis gave us some feedback on the cultures we proposed. We may try to breakdown the graffiti art and street art and think of what tea culture has included. Ms Anis commented that Japanese charm is an interesting culture to head in.

WEEK 2
Ms Anis commented our research needs to be revised and advised us to do more research on the graffiti culture based on the design system taught last week. She also advised us not to influence too much by seniors' work as we have different project requirements for this module.

WEEK 4
After the presentation, Ms Anis and Mr Asrizal questioned us about the purposes of our preliminary ideas (products). Ms Anis asked us to think about why people would like to own the products and the message we try to convey to the public through the visual design. While Mr Asrizal advised that the designs of graffiti are interesting and that we could utilise them in our visual design.

WEEK 6
Pop-up Booklet
The idea of the pop-up booklet was not encouraged by Mr Asrizal as we do not have a clear purpose for promoting graffiti. Mr Asrizal advised that our final visual design should be based on the survey result, which merchandise is the best way to promote graffiti. Mr Asrizal also questioned us about how we visually show the design of graffiti.

Merchandise
Ms Anis commented that no matter what the final visual design is, we have to consider how to rationalise the visual design with purpose and messages to convey to the public.

REFLECTION

Experience
The most unforgettable experience with Intercultural Design would be site visiting the actual graffiti in our community. I think it was very fun and interesting to discover those graffiti in our community, observing and analysing the designs of graffiti. I also enjoyed finding the graffiti artists from their graffiti and knowing about those local graffiti artists. It was a great opportunity to find out about a visual culture that we are not familiar with through this module.

In the beginning, every member of our group has a different understanding of this project's requirements and somehow we are unclear about what to do in this project. With the lecturers' guidance and a couple of discussions, we got on track and went well with our proposal and data collection part. We are stuck at the part of the final visual design, but we tried to figure out our final visual design. Although the outcome was simple, we tried our best to promote the graffiti letter styles through merchandise products.

Observation
From what we observed, we could see those graffiti include varieties of colour and shape like spikes and curves. We could also find interesting elements in the graffiti such as circles, lines and arrows. We could also observe how the graffiti are executed and the components of graffiti pieces which includes the fill, outline, decorative elements, highlight and shadow.

From the presentation, I could see other groups' efforts and their fascinating ideas. I was amazed by their ideas, perspectives and effort in doing this project. I think we should learn these from other groups and think about what makes them get those ideas.

Findings
In my opinion, graffiti is related to typography which graffiti letters are free and irregular, expressing freedom and rebelliousness. Even though I did research on graffiti art, I still find it difficult to write a basic tag. Based on my research, graffiti artists should have done a couple of attempts to design their tags and finally have the tags we could see today. Graffiti letters look simple and non-uniform, in fact, the letters have their unique styles.

Communication undeniably is the most important thing to working in groups. We went through some frustration due to the lack of communication with our group members. However, when we try to discuss and present our ideas to others, we surprisingly work well together. Besides, we do not have seniors from other semesters, and I think it is also one of the insufficiencies in our group that our perspectives and opinions are narrow and insufficient.
