FINAL PROJECT: Animated Infographics
Topic: Burnout
We are tasked to research the topic given above in our groups and break down
the information provided into parts (narrative and visualisation) to create
an animated infographic video to educate the viewers about the issue.
Expected outcomes:
- An animated infographic informing the audience about the given topic
(min 1.5 - max 3 mins video).
- Must include some form of data/statistics.
- Must use the questioning technique and provide answers.
WEEK 1 | Personal Burnout Experience & Burnout Research
Personal Burnout Experience
Writing out our own burnout experience is a good start in the final project
in which we can have a quick mindset about the topic given.
My burnout experience:
I suffered from burnout in my last semester, stressed out with assignments.
I am interested in creating designs and I am fond of aesthetic things.
That's why I enrolled on this course but Taylor's University is not my first
university option to study design course. At first, I found my classes quite
exciting and I have learnt a lot of new things about design from the
lectures. However, when all the assignments came, I felt stressed as I wish
to create good and special designs due to my perfectionism. Lacking basic
drawing skills and creativity makes me stuck in creating designs that meet
my expectations. When I got stuck, I procrastinated and refused to overcome
my difficulties. I got trapped in a vicious cycle of completing my
assignments to meet the deadlines and procrastinating. I had to stay up late
in the night to complete my assignments due to my procrastination. My life
was messed up. I have always been frustrated about the deadlines and my
procrastination. The main thing that motivates me is not interest anymore
but the deadlines set by the lectures. I tried to deal with my problems, try
think clearly and set lower standards to complete my assignments as quickly
as possible. By the end of the semester, my situation got better than in the
mid-semester.

WEEK 2 | Script Breakdown, Visual Suggestion & Mood Board
Script Breakdown & Visual Suggestion
Vincent breakdown the script and we discuss and think of the visual suggestion
for each line together.

Mood Board
We have the mood board to help us determine the art direction of our
graphics. Rachel and Xinyi created the character based on visual references
and determined the colours to use.

We decided to use the heart character created by Xinyi but make a few
adjustments to the hands and legs of the character. Xinyi also created
some expressions for the character.

WEEK 4 | Storyboard & Animatic of "Burnout"
Jeremy drew sketches of each scene and came out with a complete storyboard.
Vincent and I compile it into an animatic video. I did the voice-over while
Vincent added the animation descriptions to the animatic video.

Finalise Assets in AI

I did the animation of the first part of the Animated Infographics
"Burnout".

Fig. 5.4 Scene 2 keyframes: Character walking from left to right, Week 5 (15/2/2023) |
In scene 2, I showed the left scene in full first and pushed it to the left side and make the right scene appear. I also make the character walk by animating the legs of the character.

Fig. 5.6 Scene 3 keyframes: Animation of the character being dragged, Week 5 (15/2/2023) |
As shown in scene 3, character 1 is dragging character 2 out of the bed. Thus, I create dragging effects on the rope and both characters. I enlarge character 1 a bit when pulling the rope, showing him making a big effort to drag character 2 out. The rope has a stretch effect while character 2 has a squeeze effect when he was being dragged.

In scene 9, the character is hit by many stones. I animate the stones dropping down one by one with bounce effects.

WEEK 6 | Finalise Animated Infographics
Fig. 6.1 Week 6 progress: Amended graphics - SLIDES, Week 6
Based on Mr Martin's feedback and suggestion, I make the amendments
below. Mr Martin suggested creating dissolve effects during the scene
transition in scenes 1-2 and 5-6.

Fig. 6.2 Scenes 1-2: Dissolve effect on the character, Week 6 (17/2/2023) |
Properties of opacity and rotation are used to create a dissolve effect on the character during the scene transition between scenes 1-2.

Fig. 6.3 Scene 3 keyframes: Animation of the rope broken, Week 6 (17/2/2023) |
In scene 3, I use the Puppet Position Pin tool and Mask to create the broken effect on the rope and move out the character who is dragging to transition to the next scene.

I remain using the character and the bed from scene 3 and added other graphics to create a new scene.

From scenes 5-6, I make the flower bend down to transition to scene 6.

In scene 12, Rachel changed the graphic as suggested. I animate the characters walking on the road and being hit by stones.

WEEK 8 (extended week) | Final Animated Infographics
I combined my part and the other two parts done by Vincent and Georgina
into complete animated infographics. There were still some
insufficiencies and unsmooth animation in the video.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 4
Animatic of "Burnout"
Mr Martin commented that some scenes have long sentences. We have to
separate the sentences to be shorter and create more visuals for the
lines.
WEEK 5
Animated Infographics Part 1 (Attempt #1)
Mr Martin gave us some animation suggestions to make the motion
graphics smoother.
WEEK 6
Animated Infographics Part 1 (Attempt #2)
REFLECTION
This was a huge project for me as we have to complete each part from time to
time to ensure we are on schedule. The most difficult part for me is to
combine the whole thing and I have to adjust some little parts to make the
outcome better and smoother. The part I found interesting was using basic
animating properties to create advanced and fun animation. I tried my best
to create the animation of what Mr Martin suggested. I noticed that we
should consider the graphics and animation to be created carefully before
animating to prevent exceeding workload during animating. Layers in AI files
should also be separated clearly before animating for a better animating
experience. I also noticed that motion blur is important to make the
animation looks smooth and lively. Overall, we went smoothly throughout the
whole project as my group members are very collaborative and they would
complete their part on time.
