Project 1: Instructable Poster
I conducted sketches for graphics of the ingredients, the granny Rosina and each step of the pasta-making process (pasta dough, dressing preparation, cooking process), following the recipe breakdown that I have summarized from the video.
Assets
I create four layers of eggs in the scene to showcase the motion of cracking an egg. While there are three layers of measuring cups, also to create the motion of pouring the water.
To knead the dough, I moved the hands up and down and manipulated the dough using puppet position pin tool.
This step is a bit challenging to animate as I have to create the motion of moving the knife from up to down and the movement of the dough and ribbons.
I create a minor animation on the bubbles by applying the property of opacity at different times to showcase that the water is boiling.
- Expressions used: Wiggle, loopOut
- Other: Easy ease, Motion blur, Puppet Position Pin tool
After getting Mr Martin's feedback, I made amendments to the description of each step by simplifying them to let viewers easy to read and also a few visual changes suggested by Mr Martin.

PROJECT 1: Instructable Poster
WEEK 3 | Select recipe, Recipe breakdown, Mood board
We were tasked to select ONE recipe from
Pasta Grannies
and design an infographic poster. We have to study the chosen video, break
down and chunk the preparation and cooking process into an instructable
poster. We are suggested to try to capture each Grandma’s personality and
unique dish identity in the poster as part of the narrative structure.
Requirements:
- Size resolution: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels
- Transmit a set of instructions and at the same time educate the audience
- Present large amounts of information in a compact and easy to understand
way
Assessment criteria:
- Practical: utilise photo editing, illustration, video and animation
software
- Theoretical: include information type, device, principles (LATCH etc) and aesthetics (isometric,
simplified illustrations)

Chosen video
The recipe I chose is a sizzling pasta soup called taccu con lo zí by Rosina
from Grottammare (Marche, Italy). Taccu is the local name of tagliatelle, a
traditional type of pasta from the Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions of Italy.
Taccu are long, flat ribbons that are similar in shape to fettuccine.

I created a mood board to include some excellent recipe posters, pasta
graphics, colour palettes and important scenes in the video. I could
discover the art direction and graphics style that I intend to apply in
the instructable poster.

WEEK 6-7 | Animate Instructable Poster
Animated Instructable Poster
After finalising the poster, we will have to use the assets from the poster to
create a 60 secs recipe motion graphic. We should capture the aesthetics and
narrative of the poster with movements, SFX and music.
Scenes for Animation
Requirements:
- Duration: max 60 seconds infographic video
- Video resolution: 720p (1280 x 720 pixels)
- Format: H26/mp4
Scenes for Animation
Fig. 3.1 Scenes - PDF, Week 6 (20/2/2023)
I created 9 scenes for my recipe video. In the scenes, I used the same
colour as my poster to maintain the art style.
Below are some notable animations in AE:
I applied a mask to the title and animate it with mask path and mask feather
of 50px to make the title appear smooth with the effect of motion blur.

I turned on the 3D dimension on the smoke layer and applied wiggle and
loopOut expressions to it.

Fig. 3.4 Scene 2 keyframes: Animation of headings, Week 6 (22/2/2023) |
I first let the heading appear in the middle of the scene and followed by
reducing the size and changing the position to the top of the scene.

To showcase the animation of cracking an egg, I utilised the property of
opacity to let each layer appear and disappear on time.

Fig. 3.9 Scene 7 keyframes: Step 9 - Animation of the bubbles - GIF, Week 6 (22/2/2023) |
I create a minor animation on the bubbles by applying the property of opacity at different times to showcase that the water is boiling.
I apply the basic properties to most of the animation to showcase the
animated recipe.
- Properties used: Opacity, Position, Rotation, Scale - Expressions used: Wiggle, loopOut
- Other: Easy ease, Motion blur, Puppet Position Pin tool
Video 1: Animated Instructable Poster (Attempt #1), Week 6
(22/2/2023)
After getting Mr Martin's feedback, I made amendments to the description of each step by simplifying them to let viewers easy to read and also a few visual changes suggested by Mr Martin.
Scene 3: Step 1, Week 7 (26/2/2023)
Mr Martin suggested changing the visual of step 1 to craking two eggs instead of using the text "x2".
Scene 4: Step 5 - Well-floured, Week 7 (26/2/2023)
I added the visual of well-floured several times in scene 4 while the dough is folding.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 5
Layout #1
Mr Hafiz commented that the poster contains many instructions and
the contrast of the font type and size is not performing well,
which takes a bit of effort to read. He suggested arranging the
text and image together rather than apart.
WEEK 6
Layouts #2 & #3
Mr Hafiz commented that both layouts are good and have their own
good points. Layout #2 looks more well thought off. I just have to
highlight the important words such as measurements, weight, time,
etc.
WEEK 7
Animated Instructable Poster
Mr Martin suggested that I should shorten the instruction of each step
so that it is easier for the viewers and I should replace the word
"taccu", which I have never introduced with the word "pasta". He also
gave some visual suggestions for a better result of the animated
instructable poster. Other than that, the pace and animation of the
video are good.
REFLECTION
It was a little difficult at the beginning of this project as we have
to choose the analyse the chosen recipe video, summarise the recipe
and break it down into ingredients and steps. However, the most
difficult part is to arrange the assets into different layouts. It was
hard to include so many graphics and text in the poster. I realized
that too much information is included in the poster and I have to
simplify them. Thus, I combine some steps into one and simplify the
text. The Chunking method is very useful in grouping the information.
As I have done is separated the information into ingredients, pasta
dough making, dressing preparation and cooking process. The animating
part was interesting for me as I enjoy creating the minor motions for
the steps of making the pasta.
