PROJECT 2: Motion Graphic

Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography

WEEK 2
For this exercise, we are to create a kinetic typography video for a song. We can choose any song and we have to think about the art direction that matches the song. Our group chose the song Kill Bill by SZA for this exercise.

Chosen song: Kill Bill by SZA

Fig. 1.1 Mood board, Week 1 (12/1/2023)

We created a Miro mood board as Mr Martin suggested to explore the art direction including the font and colours to be used.

Fig. 1.2 Lyrics distribution, Week 1 (12/1/2023)

We also distribute the lyrics to several parts for each member and decided on the art direction.
- Fonts: Blade, Roboto, BlowBrush Regular
- Colours: white, red
- Background: Light Leaks https://youtu.be/cVO6K8Vk6KI

Final Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography

Final Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography, Week 4 (5/2/2023)

Song: SZA - Kill Bill https://youtu.be/MSRcC626prw?t=60
Fonts: Roboto, BlowBrush Regular
Colours: white, red
Background: Light Leaks https://youtu.be/cVO6K8Vk6KI

Exercise 4: Animation Chart

WEEK 3
We are tasked to animate an assigned chart with data using animation techniques that Mr Martin has taught in class. My assigned chart is a donut chart.

Requirements:
- Size resolution: 1920px x 1080px
- Include data and information

Fig. 2.1 Assigned chart: donut chart

Fig. 2.2 Keyframes of donut chart

I created a donut chart using four circles and adjust the endpoint percentage of each circle following the data given.

 RED   Moderate stress - 49.3%
 ORANGE   High stress - 29.5% (+49.3%=78.8%)
 PURPLE   No stress - 1.5% (+78.8%=80.3%)
 BLUE   Low stress - 19.7% (+80.3%=100%)

Fig. 2.3 Keyframes of title

Next, I insert the title and animate it using offset. The font of the text I used is Gill Sans Std Regular.

Fig. 2.4 Keyframes of data and information on the right

I insert the data and information of Moderate stress, 49.3% on the right with a dot and a line. I create a bounce effect on the dot and extend the line to the right. The text is animated using the offset property.

Fig. 2.5 Keyframes of data and information on the left

Same as the animation of the data and information on the right, I only change the appear direction of the shapes and text.

Video 3: Animation Chart (Attempt #1), Week 3 (26/1/2023)

Video 4: Animation Chart (Attempt #2), Week 3 (26/1/2023)

I made 2 attempts at the animation chart. Attempts #1 and #2 differ in the start rotation point, in which the #1 donut chart starts to rotate from the centre while the #2 donut chart does not. However, the data and information in the #1 donut chart look packed on the left while in the #2 donut chart, they are distributed equally.

WEEK 4

Final Exercise 4: Animation Chart

Final Exercise 4: Animation Chart, Week 3 (1/2/2023)

In the final outcome, I use the #1 donut chart because I want it to rotate from the centre. I slow down the text a little as Mr Martin suggested.

Exercise 5: Vector Animation

WEEK 4
We were tasked to animate a given vector that is assigned by Mr Martin. We must apply the following properties:

1. Animation: Position, scale, rotation (Bounce Effect),
2. Layer: Motion Blur,
3. Keyframe: Easy Ease,
4. Choose one only: Wiggle OR Puppet position pin tool

Fig. 3.1 Vector assigned

Animation to be created:
- Car: moving in from left to right [position]
- Characters: zoom in [scale], waving hands [wiggle/puppet position pin tool]
- Clouds: slightly moving from left to right [position]
- Baggage: pop-out and followed by a drop-down effect [scale-position]

I separated the layers which I needed to animate in AE.

WEEK 5

Final Exercise 5: Vector Animation

Final Exercise 5: Vector Animation, Week 5 (11/2/2023)

FEEDBACK

WEEK 3
Mr Martin has no comment on the start rotation point of both donut charts but he asked me to slow down the text to give enough time for readers to read.

WEEK 5
Mr Martin commented that my donut chart animation is better after I slowed down the text, and my vector animation is good enough but I could animate more if I want it to be more interesting.

REFLECTION

Among the three exercises, kinetic typography was the most challenging for me as it is the first group animation project. We were unclear about the art direction so every group member has their own style of kinetic typography and we were also lack of discussion about the art direction. Thus, I spent a lot of time adjusting every member's part to get the same art style and better results of kinetic typography. Overall, it was fun using the 3D dimension layer in AE. It can create 3D effects and fun animation.

Exercises 4 and 5 were not difficult for me and I could play around with the properties to get different results. These exercises help a lot in building a strong foundation for animating. I really learned a lot from these exercises.
