INSTRUCTIONS
FINAL PROJECT: Stop Motion
Stop motion is a filmmaking technique that involves taking a series of
photographs and then playing them in a sequence to create the illusion of
movement. Our final project required us to work in pairs and create a 1-minute
stop motion video.
WEEK 1 | 3 Favourite Stop Motion Video
Video 1: Crazy office worker's night meal by omozoc
In the stop motion video, a late worker receives faxes stating he's been
fired. Fueled by madness, he tears his clothes and transforms them, along
with his phone, into sushi. After finishing his meal, he receives another
fax revealing that the previous ones were all jokes. I like
omozoc's imaginative approach in utilizing various materials such as
fabrics, stationery, shoes, and a phone to represent the components of
sushi.
Video 2: Lost & Found | Oscar Shortlisted Stop-Motion Animation
This heartwarming stop motion video tells a precious story of friendship. The
production team skillfully employs knitted toys and a variety of materials to
construct beautiful scenes, resulting in a visually pleasing outcome. I admire
the creativity of the storyline and the team's dedicated efforts in creating
such a huge and touching production.
Video 3: Insta360 Flow - How to Film 4 Epic Stop Motion Shots (ft.
Winga)
This collaboration features Winga and the smartphone stabilizer, Insta360
Flow. Winga utilised the Insta360 Flow to capture the dynamic movement
through the streets and inside buildings. I'm truly amazed by the outcome,
as Winga skillfully incorporated rhythmic sound effects and set an
appropriate speed for each clip. The result is highly impressive and
showcases their talent and creativity.
WEEK 10 | Ideation sketches

Theme: Scam Awareness
Storyline: A bunny is using the internet and suddenly a notification message
appears. The bunny clicks on the link in the message, but then a scary hand
comes out of the screen. The bunny becomes frightened and anxious, and the
hand takes its piggy bank. This narrative serves as a means to promote public
consciousness regarding the importance of avoiding scams.
We used the Stop Motion Studio app to film the video. Here is the outcome of using the mobile camera:
Next, I nested the clips for different shots and made colour corrections to some of the clips.

Shooting
We had our shooting on June 16th, 2023 (Friday) in the Photography
Studio.
Materials: Clay (white, pink & black), A4 paper
Before shooting, we made the props using clay to make a bunny, a piggy bank
and a black hand, while A4 paper to make a laptop.

We used the Stop Motion Studio app to film the video. Here is the outcome of using the mobile camera:
Video 4: Stop motion video outcome (Attempt 0 - film with mobile
camera)
Unfortunately, the outcome was unsatisfying and did not meet the duration
requirement. Thus, we decided to make some editing, as well as add sound
effects and background music to make the outcome more interesting.
WEEK 15 | Stop Motion Editing
Attempt #1
Before started editing, I organised the clips to make sure their location
is in the same place to avoid missing files. Then, I added the clips into
the sequence and make sure the frame size is 1920 x 1080 px and the time base is 25
fps.

Next, I nested the clips for different shots and made colour corrections to some of the clips.

The first attempt is a preliminary edit that does not include sound
effects or background music to view the overall effect of the video's
content.
Video 5: Stop motion video outcome (Attempt 1 - no sound)
In attempt 2, we made several revisions to address the awkward moments from
the first attempt. Additionally, we incorporated suitable sound effects that
my partner, Wai Kei had identified and selected for the shots in our video.
Fig. 1.8 Finding sound effects, Week 15 (13/7/2023) |
I also included text elements and a tagline in the video. The tagline "Don't
Get Scammed. Stay Alert. Stay Secure." serves as a clear message to raise
public awareness about the importance of being cautious against scams.
Fig. 1.9 Adding text, Week 15 (13/7/2023) |
Fig. 1.10 Adding tagline, Week 15 (13/7/2023) |
In attempt 2, we mainly concentrated on incorporating sound effects into the
latter part of the video, resulting in the front part appearing relatively
boring. Additionally, there were some awkward parts where it was unclear how
to incorporate suitable sound effects.
Video 6: Stop motion video outcome (Attempt 2 - with sound effects)
In the third attempt, we focused on amending some sound effects, adding
background music and video transition effects.

Video 7: Stop motion video outcome (Attempt 3 - with sound effects)
However, there was a noticeable lack of smoothness at 0:28,
particularly during the plot twist and the prolonged black scene. Thus, I
added a glitch effect to the shot and shorten the duration of the black
scene.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 11
After sharing our concept and sketches with Mr Martin, he advised us to
enhance our creativity and incorporate additional details into the
storyline. One suggestion was to explore the motivation behind the bunny's
decision to click on the notification link. For example, we could
introduce a message attracting the bunny like, "Click this link and
receive 10 carrots".
REFLECTION
This stop motion project was quite challenging during the shooting phase.
We struggled to maintain consistent object and camera placement, leading
to variations in the positioning of objects across the clips. However, we
successfully solved these issues through editing, adjusting clip speed and
duration, and incorporating sound effects, which ultimately made the
outcome more engaging. Despite its imperfections, we found the project
highly interesting and thoroughly enjoyed the entire video-making process.
We are satisfied with the final result, even though it may not be perfect
or exceptional.
