INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2: Shooting Practise & Editing

Exercise 1: TikTok Video

We have to film a TikTok video to express ourselves and our personality with the theme of "My Campus Life" in a fun and creative way. Before having and executing the TikTok ideas, we were tasked to write about our understanding of TikTok and discover three favourite TikTok videos and come out with a short rationale for each.

WEEK 1

My understanding of TikTok
TikTok is an application that allows users to create and share short-duration videos. Meanwhile, they can watch videos and share, like, and comment on videos. It is possible to find all types of videos on TikTok. The videos usually come with music, especially rhythmic and popular music. There is also some text in the videos for people to understand the content easily. Some of the videos are funny and exaggerated, some are interesting and creative, but some may be misleading or boring. With its variety and short duration, TikTok has attracted more than 1 billion users.

In fact, TikTok short videos can be very addictive, and people may spend hours watching them, losing their thinking ability. We get too much information watching TikTok videos and our brain cannot process that much information so quickly. We can indeed discover ideas and inspiration from TikTok videos, but we should not be addicted to them.

My favourite TikTok Videos

Kimonomom creates videos of her and her daughter, Sutan preparing food together. Sutan is very adorable with her funny faces. The daily life and the interaction between the mother and her daughter are interesting and entertaining. Although there are no complex editing skills, watching their videos makes me feel cheerful and relaxed.

This video is moving at a fast pace with several clips. The most fascinating part is Kenny Song matches the cooking sounds with the rhythm of the song "Left and Right" very well, making the video very interesting. His filming and editing skills are excellent which makes the quality and the outcome of the video look impressive.

I like the creativity of Recider, which assumes the murder weapon is daily dishes to be washed by his roommate as a murderer. The scenes are well-decorated with blood, the props are well-prepared, and the lighting is just right so that everything fits together and matches well with the story.

WEEK 3

TikTok Ideation
We are to write down the TikTok video ideas in the Google Slides template provided. In the slides, we should include a short introduction about ourselves, a description of the video idea, some music to be used and create a mood board.

Initially, I had an idea of preparing breakfast during my school days. However, I changed to another idea of filming my campus life after receiving feedback from Mr Martin. I planned to film moments in class, with friends, doing assignments, and some views of the campus.

I used a mobile editing app called CapCut China to edit my TikTok video. I applied their amazing animation and transition effects, and some cut stickers into my video.

Exercise 2: Production Shooting

For this particular exercise, our class was divided into groups, and we worked as production shooting teams. Mr Martin provided us with footage from a Netflix series called "Beef" and a Japanese drama called "Silent" as references for conducting this shooting exercise.

WEEK 5 - WEEK 6 | Forming of Group & Film Project Assign
I was distributed to Group 2 and we were assigned to film Project S (Silent Drama). In the team, I undertook the role of the camera assistant. Below is the crew list of our production team:
Mangosteen Productions (Group 2)
Producer: Edwin
Director: Arnusha
Assistant Director: Gladys
Art Director: Cola
DOP: Hana
Camera Assistant: Rui Ying
Location Sound/Boom Operator: Zi En
Actor 1: Shar
Actor 2: Jennifer

We were to film Project S according to the storyboard provided but we can make modifications to the storyboard based on our discussion and creativity. We did not make any adjustments to the storyboard.

WEEK 8 | Production Shoot Editing
Before editing the production shoot video, I reviewed and listened to the recorded video and audio clips. I selected the clips that I wanted to include in the final video. Following that, I organised and placed these chosen clips into two separate files for easier access during the editing process.

Afterwards, I made sure to adjust the sequence settings to have a frame size of 1920 x 1080 pixels before commencing the editing process. Then, I proceeded to import the selected clips into the sequence and trimmed out any unnecessary parts.

Below is a rough edit (attempt 1) without any background music and video transitions added.

Consequently, I made further enhancements to the video by doing colour correction, adding background music, captions and an adjustment layer.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 4
Exercise 1: TikTok ideation
The TikTok video content should be related to me and express my interesting personality, with a fun and creative storyline in the video, but not just film the breakfast cooking process. I will have to rethink the TikTok video ideas and create a storyboard for the TikTok video.

REFLECTION

During this project, I acquired fundamental shooting skills, such as understanding different types of shots and effectively setting up the camera for the production shoot. Additionally, I gained valuable knowledge in video editing, including using video transitions, incorporating sound effects, applying colour corrections, and utilising adjustment layers to enhance the overall visual appeal of the video. Overall, this project was an engaging experience, allowing me to learn from shooting and video editing practices.
