PRACTICAL

Final Project: Cinemagraphs - Self-Tilted

2. DESIGN DIRECTION

Sketches
Fig. 1.1 Sketch #1, Week 12 (16/11/2022)

I intend to create a composition of the places I would like to travel to so I include some representative elements of the places, referring to the poster references 4 and 5 (Week 11: Mood Board)

Fig. 1.2 Sketch #2, Week (16/11/2022)

This idea sketch is about breaking boundaries and limits to pursue my dreams of globetrotting and finding life's purpose. The words “be bold.” is a reminder for myself as motivation and encouragement.

Digital Poster
Fig. 2.1 Digital Poster #1

Digital poster #1 is the digitised version of sketch #1. However, I found the elements in the composition of digital poster #1 are too packed in the middle, so I decided to go with the composition of sketch #2.

Fig. 2.2 Digital Poster #2 (light and dark versions)

I created light and dark versions for digital poster #2. I plan to make animation using both versions of digital poster #2.

Progression of creating Digital Poster #2
Firstly, I chose an image of myself and browsed the internet to find some elements of images that I want to include in my composition.

I cropped out the elements to be used by using Object Selection Tool to select and refine the edges of the elements in mask mode.

I add a blue solid colour as the background. I insert the frame and place it at the top of the composition. I colourise it with red colour by applying a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

right: colourise the frame with red colour

I then insert myself into the composition to be seated on the frame. I add a Black & White adjustment layer onto myself and a little shadow under myself.

Next, I insert the clouds into the composition, the small one on the top and the big one at the bottom. I apply a Levels adjustment layer to make the small cloud to be brighter. I also apply Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to colourise the small cloud with pink colour.

I intend to create a distorted frame with an abstract marble texture. I first insert the frame at the bottom and remove the book on the frame using Content-Aware Fill. I create a distorted effect on the frame by liquifying it and colourising it red colour same as the frame on the top.

middle, right: use Content-Aware Fill to remove the book

I use the train for the marble texture. I flip it vertically and match its colour with the colour of the image of myself. Then, I liquify the train to be distorted to achieve the marble texture. I create a clipping mask of the marble texture to the distorted frame and apply Soft Light blending mode to the marble texture.

I insert the hand and apply a B&W adjustment layer on it. For the messy line, I create it in Illustrator and place it on my head in Photoshop.

Lastly, I type out the text "be bold." in ITC Garamond Std Ultra Condensed font and dark red colour. I add an inner shadow to the text and duplicated it 4 times with decreasing opacities (from 85%, 65%, 45% to 25%). I then apply 2 px of gaussian blur to the duplicated texts and liquify them to be wavy. Finally, I make the texts brighter by colourising them.

Artist Statement
I used to be a timid person and afraid of expressing myself. Sometimes I take too much things into consideration and I could not make decision effectively, feeling overwhelmed about that. Thus, I create this poster is to encourage myself to be brave and bold to encounter all situations in my life including pursuing my dream.
