LECTURES
Introduction to Photoshop 3
This week, our class was conducted online but it was just like we
were in the physical class. We learned about Adjustment Layer and
Filter in Photoshop this week.
Adjustment Layers are a group of
non-destructive image editing tools that add colours and tonal
adjustments to an image, which can be edited, discarded or
restored to the original image.

TUTORIAL
Vital Tools & Project 1
Mr Fauzi has shared with us some demo videos in helping us to
work with adjustment layers and filters. I found the tricks from
the videos very helpful when I was working with the adjustment
layers and filters on my digital collage.

PROJECT 1: Collage Design
Digital Collage (with Adjustment Layers and Filters)
We have learnt the adjustment layers and filters in Photoshop in the
week 4 class. Mr Fauzi asked us to work with adjustment layers and
filters to make varieties on our digital collage. We can play with these
layers to come out with interesting and impressive effects on the
digital collage.
Process of Working with Adjustment Layers and Filters
I would like the "planets" in my digital collage to glow and become more
fascinating. I referred to the Photoshop tutorial on making glow effects
on YouTube.
Video 3: How To Create a Glowing Effect in Adobe Photoshop by Spoon Graphics
I made adjustments on the top left planet (planet 01) first. I added an
outer glow and applied the Linear Dodge blending mode on it to make planet
01 brighter.
I duplicated the blending mode layer to apply gaussian blur filters on
top. I applied 5px of gaussian blur filter and duplicated that layer to
apply another 20px of gaussian blur filter. I repeated the same action to
apply 60px of the gaussian blur filter. The gaussian blur filters help a
lot in creating the glowing effect on the planet.

Lastly, I added a glow layer on top of the adjustment layers and
filters by using the soft rounded brush with the soft light blending
mode.

This was how I made a glowing effect on the planet. Here is the difference between before and after applying the adjustment layers and filters onto the planet:

I have done the same steps with some slight adjustments on the other
three planets. Here is the outcome of the glowing effect on the
planets:

I added a Black and White layer to the boy and used Levels to adjust the
contrast level of the background (the "space"), creating a higher contrast
to the digital collage.

I added the Hue/Saturation layer to the top and bottom buildings to change the buildings to brown grey colour by adjusting the hue slider to orange colour and decreasing the saturation and lightness. This adjustment makes the boy and the planets stand out in this collage.

I made the same colour adjustment to the old projector (the
"detector") and the typewriter (the "probe") but in gold
colour.

layers, Week 4 (23/9/2022) |
I adjusted the frame of the "reflector" the same colour as the old projector and changed the "reflector" to silver colour. I used Hue/Saturation layer in both changes of colour. Lastly, I added a light blue glow onto the "reflector" which is reflected by the planet next to it.
I have made some changes to the colours of the collage elements. I
adjusted the lightness and saturation of the planets and added some
glow to the planets to make the planets gleam. I added a black and
white layer to the little boy to make a contrast with the space. I
colourized the typewriter and the old projector with gold colour. I
also colourized the buildings with a dim and dark brown-grey
colour.
